In Micro Machines, and Toybox Turbos, though that’s how you win – by pulling ahead far enough to score a point. The problem with only having a section of the track visible at one time, rather than the whole thing at once like Super Sprint, is that as some people fall behind the person in the lead can’t see where they’re going.
But rather than being a straight racing game Micro Machines added in Mario Kart style power-ups and a very clever scoring system for multiplayer.

Micro Machines was at the time an update of earlier top-down racers such as Super Sprint, Super Off Road, Super Cars, and other games beginning with the word super. But as good as Mashed was it didn’t retain the playing-as-toy-cars-in-a-giant-sized-world motif and it’s great to see that back for Toybox Turbos.įor those not familiar with the originals the simplicity of the concept is all part of the appeal. There have been numerous attempts to make a spiritual sequel, including Micro Machines V4 a few years ago, but the only one that’s really been any good is Mashed: Drive To Survive back on the PlayStation 2. It’s even by original publisher Codemasters and, more importantly, it both looks and plays just the same as you remember…ĭespite a couple of decent games on the PS one, the Micro Machines series was never quite able to translate it’s success into the 3D era. The Micro Machines series of top-down racers were amongst the best games of the 16-bit era, and this is a new sequel in all but now meaningless toy licence. If you used to own a Mega Drive you’ll already have guessed exactly what this is. Codemasters bring back Micro Machines in all but name, but is the top down racer still as much fun as it was back in the 90s?
